James 2:23
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness”. And he was called the friend of God.
I welcome you to the month of October, our month of prevailing through prayers. We are also in a season of pursue, overtake and recover all!
- This month we are engaging the force of prayers and we will prevail in Jesus name!
Who is a Friend?
- A friend is a companion and a trusted confident
- A friend is someone who is always wanting to help and support you
- A friend is someone who you like and enjoy their company
- A friend is a person who you know, have a strong liking for and trust
Someone defined friends with this interesting acronym
F is for someone who fights for you
R is for someone who respects you
I is for someone who includes you
E is for someone who encourages you
N is for someone who needs you
D is for someone who desires you
S is for someone who stands by you
The bible says Abraham was a friend of God and we see that he had a very robust relationship with God, we ought to be a friend of God by virtue of what Jesus did on the cross for us all.
Abraham was a companion of God and God enjoyed Abraham’s company.
We must always look for every opportunity to spend time with God and look forward to opportunities of prayer, study, fasting and worship.
Isaiah 41:8, “But you, Israel, are My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, The descendants of Abraham My friend”
- God is so proud of His friendship with Abraham that He says through Prophet Isaiah that Abraham was His friend.
How can a God who created heaven and earth befriend a man He created?
The Garden of Eden was a garden of great friendship because God will always come in the cool of the day to visit Adam and Eve. They enjoyed God’s company and fellowship, until the serpent made them to sin. They broke God’s trust and God had to drive them out of the garden.
- God’s original plan is to be a friend of man and Jesus came to bring our reconciliation.
The bible says if you want to be friendly, we must show ourselves friendly (Proverbs 18:24)
The meaning of this is that we must work to ensure that our friendship with God is solid and is flourishing.
SEVEN THINGS FRIEND DO
1. Friends will always want to please each other
When you have a friend, you do everything not to offend your friend.
Abraham was a friend to God and he was a God pleaser.
Today, May you become a God pleaser and not a people pleaser in Jesus name!
2. Friends visit
Have you ever seen friends who don’t visit each other? That friendship is fake like the Facebook friends you have but God is not so!
God visits His friends and whenever He visits, we have an encounter and we also must visit God, we do this by practising His presence and seizing every opportunity for fellowship like being in Church. David said I was glad when they say unto me, come let is go into the house of the Lord (Psalm 122:1).
- The main reason why we are glad to fellowship and worship is the presence of God!!!
3. They love to communicate
Friends must communicate with each other. Some people spent so much time on their phones and social media than they spend with God. Even in church you are still chatting with your friends, the meaning of this is that those people are valued more than God.
We communicate with God in prayers! Pray without ceasing means always commune with God. (Luke 18:1)
When you value your friendship with God, you must communicate with God! Sometimes God is speaking to us but we do not have time to speak to him or respond to what He is saying!
Oh Lord, may our communication with you be uninterrupted in Jesus name!!!
4. They give
Friends always love to give to each other. Now even if we do not give to God, He daily loads us with His goodness, wow! God is not tired of supplying our needs but we often do not give Him what is due Him.
When we give our offerings and pay our tithes, you are not giving it to the church but to the Lord.
2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work”
5. They have trust
What is friendship with trust? There is no friendship if we do not have trust in each other. If we must be friends with God we must trust God.
It is to have a firm belief, confidence, dependability and conviction on God.
Abraham trusted God that was why sacrificing his only son was not a challenge. He knew God had better plans for Him.
6. Friends share secrets
Friendship allows you to know the secrets of your friends. God has secrets and He only reveals them to His friends.
Gen.18:17 “And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do”
- God could not hide His secret from Abraham; He had to tell His friend Abraham.
- Friends are trusted to keep secrets and God wants to reveal secrets to you but you need to become a trusted friend.
7. They extend their kindness to the children of their friends
There is a parable that says “Your mother's enemy can never be your friend” The meaning of this is that someone is your enemy can never love your children. We can use this in the positive; it means your mother's friend will be your friend.
- The Love of friendship extends to the seeds of your friend.
- God loved Isaac, God also loved Jacob, hence He is called the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- David also extended his friendship of Jonathan to His son Mephibosheth
2 Sam.9:1 “And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?”
We must take our friendship with God seriously and ensure that your relationship and intimacy with God is very fresh and grows deeper each day.
This month of October as we spend time to pray, it is a time to boost our friendship with God!
- I pray for you that God will announce you to your generation as His friend in Jesus name!
- May your friendship with God extend to your generation in Jesus name!
- In this season of recovery, everything you have lost, you will without fail recover all in Jesus name!
